My parents got divorced when I was 6. My mom had an affair (actually several affairs, according to my dad) which resulted in her getting pregnant with my sister. Naturally, the only memories I have of them together are from when they were fighting. For some reason, it never occurred to me to wonder what they were like when they were happy and in love -- until my brother and I went to Texas to visit Dad this past summer. While we were driving to his house, Dad and I somehow got to talking about the divorce, and he broke down in tears. I realized that if he was still hurting that much 15 years after the fact, they must have loved each other at some point.

Imagine my surprise last night, when I was visiting my paternal grandparents and my grandmother gave me a bag of letters Mom wrote to Dad while she was in college and he was in the marines, saying Dad wanted me to have them so I'd know that they did, indeed, love each other at one point. I read a few of them, and...wow. I just can't get my head around the fact that my mother is the same person as the lovesick 19-year-old who wrote those letters. They're extremely mushy and full of cliched phrases like "I'll love you forever" and "I'll never leave you." Although that obviously turned out not to be true, I like to think she meant it at the time she wrote it. It's better than seeing her as a whore who broke my father's heart. I think that to a degree, my grandparents still see her that way. My grandmother told me that when they were in the process of getting divorced, Mom said she knew the day they got married that she was making a mistake. She started crying, and my grandfather added that he knew Dad was making a mistake in marrying her.

But I know there are two sides to every story, so it can't have been all Mom's fault, even though it would be so easy to believe it was. I doubt I'll ever know the whole story.

Kahlan/Cara (Legend of the Seeker)

1. Why do you dislike #11 (Finn/Rachel)?
I just never saw any chemistry there. They're better off as friends IMO.

2. Who do you know that ships #9 (Puck/Rachel)?
I don't think anyone on my F-list even watches Glee.

3. What would be your ideal scenario for couple #3 (House/Cuddy)?
I'd want them to have an open, honest talk about their feelings for each other, followed by hot smexing (FOR REAL, please).

4. What is your favorite moment for #1 (Xena/Ares)?
Gah, way too many. I guess I'll say the final scene of Coming Home. I love how relaxed they are with each other after everything that happens. The hand-holding, the kiss, the sadness in her eyes when she tells him he's "bad for her," the way she just smiles when he says, "So you're saying there is a chance?" *melts* If that isn't proof of her feelings for him, I don't know what is.

5. How long have you been following couple #6 (Cox/Jordan)?
About three years, I think (though, sadly, the real Scrubs has ended D:).

6. What's the story with #8 (Puck/Quinn)?
They're two not-so-nice people with an obvious soft spot for each other. I love how hard Puck tries to prove himself to Quinn, and Quinn seems to be at her happiest when she's around Puck. Their food fight was adorable.

7. Which ship do you prefer--#2 (Arthur/Gwen) or #4 (Richard/Kahlan)?
Arthur/Gwen, hands down. They're very similar (both are forbidden romances), but I just prefer Arthur and Gwen as characters to Richard and Kahlan, and I think they've grown more from their relationship than R/K have. When we first meet Arthur, he's extremely arrogant, but he slowly becomes more humble and learns to put others' needs before his own, and Gwen helps him with that quite a bit. By contrast, Gwen is pretty shy and passive at first, but she slowly becomes more assertive, and Arthur helps her with that -- not as much as she helps him, but still, I think they bring out the best in each other.

8. You have the power to make one ship non-existent. Choose from #10 (House/Cameron) or #12 (Arthur/Morgana).
I sort of want to say Arthur/Morgana because then there would be a lot less people hating on Arthur/Gwen, but I have to go with House/Cameron. Cameron's attraction to House always seemed very one-sided to me, and it was mostly based on the fact that he was "damaged" and she wanted to fix him. Not exactly a healthy relationship. Also, I never saw any chemistry between them, and I just couldn't get past the age difference.

9. What interests you about #14 (Kahlan/Cara)?
There's so much tension between them you could cut it with a knife. And they're both HOT -- I'm mostly straight, but I'd jump the fence for either of them. :P

10. What's a song that reminds you of #1 (Xena/Ares)?
"I Hate You Then I Love You" by Celine Dion and Luciano Paverotti. The title says it all. :D

11. Which of these ships do you love the most right now?
Arthur/Gwen. :D

12. Which do you dislike the most?
House/Cameron. See #8.

13. If you could have any of these pairings double date, who would they be?
Xena/Ares and House/Cuddy. OMG. Either of these pairings alone is hot enough to make me spontaneously combust, so I can't even imagine what the four of them together would do. Plus, the banter they'd exchange would be epic.

14. Have #2 (Arthur/Gwen) kissed yet? Elaborate if yes.
YES! Twice, in fact. :D

#1

#2

15. Did #4 (Richard/Kahlan) have a happy ending, or is one likely?
I'm sure they'll be together eventually, but the writers seem to want to keep them apart as long as possible.

16. What would make you start shipping #14 (Kahlan/Cara)?
I'm pretty devoted to Richard/Kahlan, but if Kahlan started making out with Cara, I might have to convert. :P She never would, though. Her heart belongs to Richard.

17. If only one could happen, which would you prefer--#7 (JD/Elliot) or #13 (Xena/Callisto)?
JD/Elliot. They're meant for each other. Xena/Callisto would be interesting, but way too destructive (plus, I'm too devoted to Xena/Ares).

18. You have the power to decide the fate of #5 (Mick/Beth).
Mick turns Beth into a vampire and they live happily ever after. :D
When a friend, whom I'll call Ethel, Natalie and I were driving to the mall today, we started talking about my brother's friend Mike, who used to have a big crush on Ethel and who's been a bad influence on my brother lately. The conversation went something like this:

Ethel: You know how everyone thought Mike and I were going to get married? I wonder what your Mom would think now, since she basically hates him.
Natalie: Why does Mom hate Mike?
Me: Because she thinks it's Mike's fault that --
Ethel: Don't tell her. Your mom doesn't want her to know.
Me: (annoyed) Why?
Ethel: Because she doesn't need to.
Me: I don't care. I'm going to tell her. Mom thinks it's Mike's fault that Nick's (my brother) doing drugs.
Ethel: Your mom didn't want her to know! Now it's on your ass when she finds out you told her.
Me: Don't tell me what to do! I'll tell her if I want to!
Natalie: I didn't even hear what you said.
Ethel: Your mom thinks it's Mike's fault that Nick's been drinking and partying so much.
Me: (sarcastically) Oh, that's so much better than what I said.
Ethel: Yeah, it is.
Me: No, it isn't.
Ethel: Whatever, Aimee. You need to be more mature about this.
Me: OMG YOU BIG MEANIE! *cries*

...well, I didn't say "OMG YOU BIG MEANIE!," but I did cry. A lot. And I made Ethel feel guilty for trying to stop me from telling my little sister something that would probably break her heart. *headdesk* I am 21 fucking years old. I am a GROWN WOMAN. I've worked so hard to become a stronger person these past few years, but the fact that I still can't seem to kick the habit of throwing extremely embarrassing temper tantrums when I don't get my way makes it all seem pointless. I hate myself for making everyone feel like they have to tiptoe around my fragile little feelings. That's not the kind of person I want to be. But unfortunately, it's the kind of person I am, and it seems there's nothing I can do to change that. *sigh*

New rules for NaNoWriMo

1. Write only using Write or Die.
2. Keep the screen covered while writing so I'm not tempted to correct/rewrite anything.
3. No re-reading.

It's Day 8, and my current word count is a whopping 3,014. I'm over 10K behind. My motivation is at an all-time low. I'm not giving up, though. I did it once, and if I follow these rules (and avoid the NaNo website like the plague so everyone else's insanely high word counts don't make me want to kill myself), I can do it again.

And now for something FUN! Yay!

1. What did you want to be when you grew up, when you were little, and how has that changed?

I think I've always known on some level that I wanted to be a writer, but I've played with a few other possibilities. Broadway star was my favorite, but after getting cast in the chorus in all my school musicals, I had to accept that it wasn't meant to be. I still like to pretend I'm a Broadway star at home, though (good thing I live alone, lol). I also thought about being a vet because I love animals, but I knew I couldn't handle being around sick/injured animals all day. When I was a freshman in high school, my best friend showed me part of the novel she was working on, and I loved it so much that I asked to co-write it with her. Since then, I haven't been able to imagine myself doing anything but writing.

2. What are you looking forward to the most about the upcoming Xena convention? (And bonus question, do you have any favorite snacks to stock for the hotel room? :P Always looking for details.)

Meeting my fellow XOCers, of course! And as for snacks, I have a huge sweet tooth. Give me chocolate and I'll be your best friend forever.

3. What first drew you to Xena: Warrior Princess?

Ooh, difficult question. I don't remember much about my first experience with the show because I was only 7-8, but I know the episode was Return of Callisto. I think I liked it right away just because of the "chicks who kick butt" factor, but what made me a fan forever was the "Teach me!" scene. Even though I was too young to fully understand it, the raw emotion just blew me away -- Gabrielle overcome with rage, Xena stern and cold, but obviously devastated by Gabrielle's pain. It really made me sympathize with both characters and want to get to know them, and I think it was also what made me want to learn the rest of their story after not watching the show for years.

4. Out of all the scenes that you've written, which have been the most fun and why?

For my NaNo or in general? As you can probably tell, my NaNo has been anything but fun so far. It's been complete mental agony. The story is dry, boring, and severely lacking in depth and passion, like everything else I've written lately. I don't think I've really had fun writing anything since high school, when my best friend and I were working on the aforementioned novel.

A little background info on the novel: It's called The Protectress. The hero is a teenage girl named Alexia. The villain is the Keeper, a really evil dude who wants to kill Alexia to avenge the death of his lover, whose soul now inhabits Alexia's body. He killed a dragon breeder, enslaved his dragons, and started using them to wreak havoc on the world. To save the world, Alexia has to capture and tame all the dragons with the help of her immortal mentor/love interest, Skylar.

I thought it was ridiculous when Ashley (my best friend) first told me about it, but when she gave me part of it to read, I was absolutely fascinated. Co-writing it with her was amazing. It was like we were rulers of a secret world that no one else knew about. We didn't obsess about the quality of the writing -- in fact, a lot of the time, it was nothing more than a contest to see which one of us could annoy the other one more. She would try to annoy me by writing the darkest, angstiest scene she could come up with, and I would try to annoy her by writing the sweetest, fluffiest scene I could come up with. These days, I'm probably more fond of darkness and angst than I am of sweetness and fluff, but back then, our battles were a blast.

5. Out of all the characters you've created, which has been the most fun and why?

I guess I can't use any of the characters from The Protectress, since Ashley created them, not me. I hated last year's NaNo slightly less than I'm hating this year's, so I'll go with last year's MC, Kenza. First of all, her name is awesome -- I got it from a fantasy name generator and instantly fell in love with it. As for her personality, she starts off as an immature, self-absorbed, shallow, rude, snarky brat, but gradually transforms into a more loving and generous person and blah blah blah. The one thing I enjoyed about writing the story was coming up with bitchy things for her to say. I didn't put as much effort into her character development as I could have, but I think she has the potential to be a great character, and I'll come back to her someday.
I'M GOING TO THE 2010 XENA CONVENTION!!!!!

I was prepared to pay $424.90 to either fly down on Thursday afternoon and come back Sunday evening or fly down on Friday morning and come back Monday morning. Instead, I'm paying $254.40 to fly down on Thursday evening and come back Monday morning. I won't have to get up insanely early to leave, I'll have a ride, so I won't have to walk or take a cab, I won't miss too many classes, I won't miss any con events, and I (hopefully) won't be too jet-lagged when I get back. Even though I'm an agnostic with atheist leanings, I feel compelled to thank the Lord Almighty for AirTran Airways and their awesomely low ticket prices, and for Nathan, the kind and generous soul who offered to drive me to the airport.

The moment I finished booking my flight, this surreal feeling came over me. After two years of fighting with my mom and reading everyone's convention reports at the XOC with extreme jealousy, I'm finally GOING. This is going to be the experience of a lifetime, I have no doubt. I can't wait to meet all my fellow XOCers, especially ladykate63 and taliatoennien, who's going to be my roomie. :D

I can finally say something I've been afraid to say, but have known deep down my entire life:

I don't believe in God.

Leastways not the Christian God.

What led me to this realization? Well, despite being raised in a devout Catholic household, I never felt any connection with God. After I finished high school, I gradually stopped going to church except on holidays. But I still wanted to believe in God, namely because if there was no God, it would mean that when I died, I'd simply cease to exist, and that thought terrified me.

In my second year of college, however, I experienced a crushing blow to what faith I had left. I took a religious studies class, and during our unit on Judaism, it suddenly occurred to me: If God is supposed to embody love and forgiveness, why would he slaughter all the first-born children in Egypt? I couldn't think of an answer. But eventually, I was able to brush it off because no one takes everything in the Bible literally; not even my mother, whose Catholic faith is an extremely important part of her life.

Recently, the question of God's existence started bugging me again. I thought understanding the atheist's perspective might help me decide what I believed (or didn't believe), so I checked out some atheist websites, and I happened to stumble across this one. What I read there shocked me, to say the least. Having never read the entire Bible, I was deeply disturbed to learn that the slaughter of the first-born children in Egypt was by no means the only instance of God behaving in an unloving, unforgiving manner.

I could just choose to ignore all the acts of murder, rape, slavery, etc. done in the name of God, but that begs the question: How much of the Bible can I ignore and still consider myself a true Christian? I'd have to ignore almost the entire Old Testament. If God is willing to kill 42 children for making fun of a bald guy, I have no doubt he'd be willing to condemn me to Hell for disregarding such a large part of his divine law.

My dad says it's better to believe than not to believe because if you believe and you're wrong, nothing happens to you, but if you don't believe and you're wrong, you go to Hell. Well, if the only way I can get into Heaven is to worship a God who condones murder, rape, and slavery, I'd rather go to Hell.

There's also the age old question of why, if God loves us, he still allows us to suffer. Most Christians say it's to test our faith. By that logic, Hitler and the terrorists responsible for the 9/11 disaster were right to kill millions of innocent people because they were simply doing what God wanted them to: Testing our faith. Remind me again why I'm supposed to make it my ultimate goal to spend eternity with this guy? Again, I'll take Hell. Frankly, it sounds much more appealing (as does nonexistence, although the thought of it still terrifies me).

To sum this up, I don't consider myself an atheist because I'm still open to the possibility of something existing beyond our universe, but I don't believe it's the Christian God, who's nothing more than an enormous contradiction.

My result:

VNUC (vegetable, noodle, sUbtle, cold) - Green salad

Somewhat serious and crunchy, Green Salad personalities are very down to earth and know their roots. Green Salads are calm in a crisis and tend to be unflappable. They are stabilising influences in the work environment. However, if they are going to become stressed, this is most likely to occur in the morning when they are still waking up. Generally, what you see is what you get with this personality type.

Even is she is quick to assume, she is willing to remedy, and will always reward the honorable actions of those around her.

Take The Literary Character Test at HelloQuizzy

Your result for The In-Depth HP Personality Test...

Nymphadora Tonks

You're Tonks, you've got the ability to change your facial features at will, and you're part of the Order of the Phoenix. I would probably have no problem at all starting and maintaining good conversation with you! My guess is that you like to read and you paid attention during English class. You understand that being solidly educated when it comes to literature is imperative to being a well-rounded individual. Right on. We need more people of your level out there.

Take The How Well-Read Are You? Like her, you have a good sharp mind, and can look after yourself, no one could catch you if you didn't want to be caught! Although you can be a romantic, you wouldn't be fooled into a relationship that was bad for you, you'd rather be a bit suspicious of people until you know they are definately good. Despite hardship and bad circumstances, you can always be counted on to fight and not give in, to not lose hope. You take stregnth from religion or within rather than from family or your lover, and can exist quite happily on your own although you like being social too. You are one of the strongest disney heroines, witty, firey, passionate, strong willed, and nimble, making everyone want you, but getting your own way and doing your own thing.

Take The What Disney Female are you Test at HelloQuizzy

Your result for The Character Analysis Test...

Moralist

You have a high Morality score.
